I will be I including a video on my website. This is to break up the text and have a different way of conveying information to the viewer of the website. The video will only be a short one, as if it was too long, it may look too ammeter and make the website look bad overall.

The main aim of the video is to get the audience to understand the suffering of people who suffer from cancer.

Planning - Script

Brainstorm

Planning - Linked page 2

We can see that this layout has the navigation buttons on the left side of the page, so then it links with the home page layout.
Also this has a lot of information, so this will be very useful for my target audience

Planning linked page 1

This layout of a linked page shows again another picture which will indicate to the audience what the page involves. Also the sub title will also tell what the page is about, so the viewer will find it easy to use the page.
The navigation button is at the top of the page where it will be easily noticed for them to click onto other pages including the home page.
This page will include more text as the viewer will want to find out more information.

Planning - Home page layout 2

We can see that i have made this page very simple so then it can be used easily.
I have again used little text on the front page as I don’t want to bore my viewers, because when they click on the links, then they will find more text.
A large picture and video will occupy the audience; this is an advantage as this will make my website more interesting.
The links on this page are on the left side of the page so then it is easily notices, as from the results off my questionnaire said they wanted obvious links.

Planning - Home page layout 1

We can see from the layout that i have created that i have made a large amount of space for my graphic video that I will create. It has also been placed in the middle of the page so then it is the first thing the viewer will see.
The logo is also in the usual place for a website (top left hand corner) so then the audience can easily see my logo.
From my questionnaire, I found out that my target audience did not want much text on the homepage, so I have made a reasonable amount of space to put in vital information.
Overall this layout will be very affective to my target market.

Institution of product placement

People across the world can access my website easily as internet is one of the most well used technologies in man kind. So this is a great advantage as my website doesn’t cost anything to get onto, except form the cost of the computer itself.
Websites can be widely accessible through out the world and they are also very popular too, this could be because all of the many different ways in which websites can be accessed. There are many places in which my website will be viewed, as people who are at home with spare time, and they go onto there computer, also people who go to “Starbucks” may have a cup of coffee and get free internet so again they will go on the cancer website. So when I advertise my website it will persuade people to view it. However I must make sure I advertise my website in where my target market will see. If I do not do this efficiently then it may affectively be time consuming and waste money.

What i should include in my website

In my website I will include a variety of features that will gain maximum views;

- Include both long and short information so people don’t become bored.
- I will include other types of cancer so then people are aware of the matter
- I will make sure that my website uses a variety of colours throughout the website so then it has both formal and informal look to attract a larger audience
- Keep a consistent font throughout the website; makes it look more professional.
- Keep the same font but change the sizes of it so it. This will make the website look more interesting.
- Include any latest charity events that will appeal to the viewer
- Use images appropriate to the website, a variety or large and small.
- Use different colours to make certain things on the website stand out as it makes it more effective.
- Make sure the links are simple and are easy to use.
- That it includes vital and useful information that the viewer can take into account

What I should not include in my website

I will make sure that I don’t have things where it will bore my target audience so I will not include things such as;

- Not target one type of gender so that I am appealing to a wider audience by aiming at both.
- Do not include any other campaigns like politics or environmental
- Don’t include long text as some people may become bored.
- Do not include too many pictures as it may not be giving enough information about cancer

Research informing (What I have learnt)

I have done a questionnaire and have found out vital information to use for my website. I have found my target market which is adults who are either male or female. I want to have both sexes so then I have maximum views.
So by having this as my target market then I need to make my website formal so then my target market will be able to use my page without any difficulty and feel comfortable reading it. It will also need interesting features such as video, pictures and maybe a blog to occupy my audience and so it keeps the page interesting.
I also need to make sure that my website isn’t to pressuring towards the audience as cancer is a very serious topic. So by using simple features and information that people can easily use will be the main aim.
I also need to keep my navigation links very simple and to not get to technical with them otherwise it will confuse my viewers.

However I feel that my website shouldn’t be aimed at a particular age group as all age groups are affected by Cancer. So I will make sure that the website will be suitable and appealing for all age groups.

Technical Detail

I have found out from my primary research that users of websites don’t like to have to wait for websites to load when they click to open it, or open a link. So for my website I will need to make the loading time very quick and effective, to keep the users happy. I will also need to make sure my links and navigation buttons direct the users to the correct pages and load quickly.
I found the best way to do this is to have my images and videos on my website to be in the format of .jpg and .giffiles. Also I will have my website in the format of HTML and CSS; this will keep increase loading speeds.
I have also learnt that in order for my website to be successful I will need to keep all the important links on every page of the website so that people can easily and clearly navigate their way around the website.
I will be designing the website in the resolution 640 x 480. If I do this my website will then work on all monitors ranging from the smallest resolution (640 x 480) to the largest (1024 x 768). This will be important so that all internet users who want to view my website will be able to.
Font- In my website i need to use the right font that will be easily read by my viewers. so i will use "Times new Roman" which is a simple font where it is easily read.
I will not use special detailed fonts because on my cancer website it is a serious matter so my text needs to be read with formal and serious detail, so will not use fancy font where it will confuse the viewers.

Video - On my website I will include a 30 second clip of a person being interviewed on how cancer has affected there lives and people around them.
By doing this, it will be very affective as it will involve great camera shots and lighting to gain maximum affect to the audience. The background will be somewhere soft and calm where the person being feels comfortable and the people watching will also feel comfortable. Also the lighting will be bright as I want to give a positive view to the audience and not dark to give a negative vibe.
The camera shot will be only focused on the person being interviewed and nothing else as my only focus is them. This will be affective as the target audience will feel involved and will take the information in to account.

Navigation buttons - The navigation buttons will need to be simple and easily noticed so then my target audience will be able to use my website with no difficulty.
I will make them in bold colours and maybe coloured so then again they are eye catching and will advertise my other links.
They will always be placed either the top of the page, or on the side. Wherever i put the navigation buttons, they will be placed in the same area each time so then the audience wont be confused on where they will be each page.

Sounds - In my website the sound will be only be used on the video, so i will have to make sure that it will be affective. By doing this i will have the sound bery clear so then there will be no confusion on what the person is saying. Also the volume will have to be loud enough for the person to hear. However the sound cannot be too loud otherwise they may be put off by the noise.
I will not use sound on any of the links or navigation buttons as this will not fit into my target market, and my website is a very serious topic so i don’t want to use sounds to put off the viewers.

Planning - Logo

I have created a number of different logo's. However i will not choose any of the logo's i have created as they do not fot in with my target audience. So instead my logo will be a 3d effect white colour that says "Cancer Care". This is the best logo for my website as it will suit my target audience, which is all age groups as any age group is a victim for cancer.

Planning - Picture

Planning - Language

Language – I will use a lot of formal language throughout my website, as this will make my website look more professional and the general public will be more likely to read my website, it the content relates to them and they can understand it. I will also use some informal language in places so that I will be able to attract the youthful people of the population. I won’t use it too often though otherwise I will lose the quality of my website and the professional look. The content will make it comfortable for the users to read my website.

Planning - Colour

I will use a variety of colours on my website, however I will use a themed colour throughout the edge of the page so then it looks professional.

I feel a dark purple will be a good themed colour for my website. Breast Cancer has a pink themed colour on their websites so I will do the same however choose a purple colour.

Planning - Title

Names – I have created a spider diagram for the potential names of my website. I think when designing your website it is better to have a few names to choose from, so I have created a selection of names in the spider diagram. I feel it is really important to have a good name for a campaign website as there are a lot of websites to choose from and when the users search on Google, a lot of websites come up, so for them to go on your website it is important to have a good catchy name that will grab their attention and make them click on it. I want the user to remember the name of my website. I think the names below best suit the genre of my website.

Statistics on Macmillan.com

Below I have got statistics on Macmillan.com

We can see from the demographics that the results to this are the same to the results for cancer research, with females viewing the website more than males. Also the age group is the older type and not the young age group as they would find it boring to look at, and again the same point as the other results; the lower income people view the website more than people with a high income.
However the only different result is the education. The index is increasing for people who go to college or school, as for cancer research shows a decrease in people who go to school don’t view the website. However the people who don’t go to school still have a large number of viewers.
So overall Macmillan has a different target audience compared to the cancer research website as Macmillan targets towards a larger age group and also all people who go to school or not. But they are very similar results on sex, ethnicities and if they have kids or not.
Another important point is that the website alone gives a good vibe which attracts a larger age group from the charity events, of running, golf and football which would be done from a younger age group that has been drawn into this website, which has affectively increased the views of the younger age group. Also the font and background is green which is bright and colourful that attracts the a larger age group.

The views from American’s show that there is a consistent amount of viewers at a high level of around 100K and is still increasing. So the Macmillan website shows a positive view to the public and has obviously got a good vibe to it that attracts more people and different age groups that people must view.

Statistics on Cancer research.com

I went on the quantcast.com and found the figures of what the cancer research has on a monthly basis. Below we can see the graphs of the statistics.

Above are all the different demographics for January 2009. On the right hand side they show the index numbers on the average viewings, as the 100 will be the base number. The demographics show the viewings of sex, age, ethnicities, if you have kids or not, income and qualifications in education.
63% of females are viewing the website, compared to 37% of males. This shows that there are more females than males that view this website. This may be so because they care about it more or they want to find out information about cancer more than males. Also the percentage of females is it has increased 23% from last month.
On the age graph we can see that the most popular age is 50+, this may be so because they are retired and will have more time to look on these types of websites. The least popular was 3-11, the reason for this is that they are to young of an age to access a computer, however if they were then they wont know how to access the website itself.
Overall on the age group graph as the age increases so do the views from the older age. So for my website I may target my website to the older age group as they are most likely to visit it.
70% of viewers have no kids and 30% of them had kids. This shows that people who are single or married but with no kids have more time to view websites such as this. And the index had risen to 106 which is a 6% of viewers from this section compared to last month. So for my website I will also target towards single or married people with no children.
The next demographic shows that the people on low income view the website more than people on high income, this may be so because the people who are on lower income and their job may not require as much work hours as the people on high income and so effectively they will have more spare time and will view the website more often. Also the index on this is increasing so it looks that there will be an increase in amount of people on low income viewing the website.
The last demographic shows the education of the viewers, we can see that half of the viewers have no college and that the least with 12% go to school. So this shows that the people who are not in college are more interested in viewing the website thank compared to people who go to school. And the index is also increasing through the viewers who don’t go to college and a decrease for both who go to college and or school.

The next graph shows the views of people who are from the U.S.

We can see from the scatter graph above that the amount of viewers from America is increasing from September with around 5K. However the peek point is in December with 31K. This shows a 26K difference. The reason for the increase around winter is that due to the bad weather around this time of the year people don’t go out as much and are suck at home on the computer. So the website needs to be on top shape around the winter time to gain maximum viewers.

Link Page from NHS

This page is the link to front page; it is easily accessed by the large icons above where they are also colour coded to gain more viewers to click on them. We can see that I have clicked onto the “find services” icon, where it then provided me a page with different choices between the -following,
-A&E
-Alcohol
-Dentists
-GP’s
-Hospitals
-Mental health
-Etc
These are all features that are produced to keep the viewer occupied and to find new information. This is a good method of informing the viewer different things such as above, by clicking an icon and it involves several other features to keep the viewer interested.
The font on this page is a larger because there isn’t as much information as there was on the home page. So to cover the page there is larger fonts and bigger icons.
However the large icons are not larger just to cover the page, they are the important part of the page so they have been placed in the middle and a large size so then they are easily noticed by the viewer.
We can see that the logo is till top left hand corner where it will be seen easily, it is very larger compared to other websites, this may be so because they want to be different compared to any other website and so then when the viewer looks at the large logo, they will recognise it easier than having a smaller one.
There are no pictures on this page as this may be a weak point to the website as this may bore the younger age group because they will want some king of animation to occupy them and to keep in interest.
The basis of this page is to help the public find information on what they are looking for, so the page has given a “search” tab where you can type in what you are looking for and it will come up with it. This is very helpful as it gives information which it didn’t have on the website pages alone.

Real Media Artifact 4

This website focuses on skin cancer, where the NHS is mainly involved to help.
Out of the four websites this will have the most information about the illness. However it will be most difficult to use and has little eye catching affects.
The first point I saw was the video in the middle/left side of the page. It is positioned in this way so then there is enough room to have text by it. It is very eye catching because it has bright yellow and purple contrasting together to create an obvious feature for the viewer to see. To involve a feature such as video on the website is a very tempting for the person viewing the website to use. So this is very affective as this will occupy them to use the website and find new information.
The colour is very dull and does not attract the audience to view the page. However this may be done to boost the video as the main attraction so then most viewers click on the video. This is again very affective as it will show new information for the public and they can learn from it.
There is a lot of text on the page as it gives a lot of information for the public to read. This suggest that this website is targeted towards a more older age group and not towards a younger gage as the text may bore them and be put off. However the more mature adults will read the text and learn new information for themselves and others.
There are hyperlinks at the top of the page to allow easy access for the viewer to move onto different pages. They are highlighted in bright colours to be seen easily.
However the hyperlinks on the right side of the page are not bold or in bright colours, as they are not as important and it will persuade to viewer to click the ones above because they are more attractive.
This is a good feature to do towards the audience as they will affectively be persuaded into what to click. So by doing this they can put the important information on the pages where the audience will most likely be clicking on from being persuaded by the colour and font size etc.
The logo is a well known symbol of the NHS, which is a service which the government provides to the free market economy. This is a great advantage for the public as when they see this logo they know they are getting good and reliable information and they can trust it. Also as skin cancer treatments are provided on the NHS it will be free so people will be motivated to explore more information if its free treatment. So this is a good point to have for the website as there are three key factors of motivating the people to explore more of the website and gaining new information at the same times, from the video which gives vital information, coloured hyperlinks which persuade people to click onto other websites to find new information. And the final factor is the logo which is well recognised by the public so this also motivates the user to explore more.

Real Media Artifact 3 (Breast Cancer)

This website it called “Breast cancer care” it focuses mainly on women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and whoever needs help to talk to someone about it.
The main feature which is recognised by the public is the symbol. It is an upside-down logo of the original breast cancer campaign. This is done because the breast cancer logo is probably the most well known logo in the world. So they put it upside-down so then it will be well recognised by the public.
Another point to the pink shows a main target audience, which would be women as it is a female’s colour. This can be a disadvantage to them as they are targeting towards mainly women by having a pink and excluding men as part of there target audience, even though men can also get breast cancer.
It also copies the colour theme of the light pink from the original breast cancer website. This again will be easily recognised by the public, so this is a great advantage for a new upcoming website to be recognised into the cancer campaign market.
On the left side of the website there are big bold hyperlinks of information on breast cancer. This is a good feature to have on the front page so then it allows to viewer to find more information about cancer and to be aware of it for themselves and others. The creator of the website has put the hyperlinks in bold give an obvious eye catching mark where they will see easily and also because it’s important compared to the other text which is not in bold.
There are three small pictures on the front page which represent three different things, the first picture shows a women giving advice to other people, so this suggests that if you click on this you will go onto a link where you can find help lines talk to.
The second picture shows lots of people getting together, so this suggests campaigns and community help. And the third and final picture shows women who is reading something; this suggests you can get free leaflets to find new information without meeting anyone to be uncomfortable.
All three pictures show a true easy understanding of what they show, this is a good feature to have on the website so then the viewer can understand what is happening through the website without being confused.
Finally to conclude the final analysis of the website I would like to say that the target audience of this website is mature adults and female. I think this because the pink is towards the women and there it lots of information about breast cancer which may confuse a younger age group, so it will be used by mainly adults.

Link Page from Macmillan

This is the link off the front page, the link off the page was called “Get involved” this tells me that as a viewer I can get involved to help other people, for example running events, biking events, golf events etc. All these events are hyperlinked on the left side column of the page to allow easy access to the viewer to click on to.
The colour has stayed the same on this page so then it doesn’t confuse the viewer, by keeping the website green throughout the website, people will remember the website when the see green things elsewhere because they have viewed this website previously.
There is a large picture on the page, which shows a man running and lots of people cheering for him with green T-shirts on which is the theme colour of the website and represents Macmillan cancer support. This immediately focuses the viewer’s attention to look at the picture as it covers most of the page. This is very affective as it shows happy people cheering and helping provide money and support for the people who are diagnosed with cancer.Overall this link shows the passion of people supporting one and another and also shows people getting together and not just one person helping.

Real Media Artifact 2 (Macmillan)

This front page focuses on the support of people who are diagnosed with cancer. This is very effective with the special use of colours and pictures.
There is a powerful amount of different shades of green across the front cover; this suggests that it’s a more depressing mood as the colours are dark. This also contrasts with the picture as it also shows a depressed woman who holds a hot water bottle with a blanket rapped round her, this shows that she is ill but is given help by others as she was given the blanket to keep her warm. This is very affective as it shows protection to the women and also it allows the viewer to feel comfortable to look at the website as it gives the impression of helping people.
We see the dark green as a sign of depression and sadness. However the lighter green gives a different point of prospective. For example a traffic light turns green when cars are allowed to move forward. This is connected to the website as the light green gives an indication of moving forward onto the next step in life and helping people to create a better environment for them.
The page shows a little amount of text as they don’t want to bore the reader, however they use a lot of hyperlinks which persuade the viewer to click onto other pages which affectively makes them explore more of the website. This is a good use of hyperlinks as they are placed in the middle of the page so then the reader immediately focuses on that area and is persuaded to see what’s else is happening throughout the website by clicking them.
The layout is very basic like the cancer research website, as it shows a basic middle sized picture, headline small top left and text below.
I think the website is presented in this way to allow the user to not be confused with having large amount of text and hyperlinks so then it doesn’t scare off the viewer.
The main attraction to the page is the picture as it is an eye catching feature which focuses the viewer to know what the website is, he/she will then draw there attention to the hyperlinks which is then moved onto other features to explore more of the website. This is a very affective cycle which is used by many websites to keep the readers attention so then they don’t wonder off to other websites.
The font below the picture is small, which suggests it is not the focus of the page, and that the larger text on both sides of the picture is the main font attention as it is a larger font size.
It says, “Macmillan cancer support improves the lives of people effected by cancer”
This quote is very affective and is directs straight to the point of what the website is about. This is another good feature of the page as the reader will see the picture and then read the large text next to it. At this point the viewer will already know what the website focuses on and at a quick time, as the viewer will not use more time reading the page to know what it’s about. This is an important point feature that a website must have as; they only have about a minute to occupy the viewer until they are bored and will move onto other websites.
The target audience to this website would be an adult as the picture is an older woman and had no features which apply to a younger age group.

Link off Cancer Research (Moving animation)

Real Media Artifact

My first real media artefact is on one of the most popular cancer campaign websites in the U.K. This campaign is called “Cancer research” this website involves in all types of cancer and talks about how they can help and find information about all types of them.
The first thing that pulls my attraction is the logo. Which are “Cancer research” and an arrow pointing towards the right. The arrow is pointing to the right, this suggests that its going to the next step or going onto the next objective. So this can connect with the basic cancer research on how they are progressing on the cure for cancer or the next step on helping the people who are unfortunately have cancer. So this arrow is very affective were people can see this on the website an immediately recognise the symbol and know what the website is.
The layout on the website is very basic this is could be so because of the target audience it has. So then young children who enter the website cab easily read and acknowledge what is on the website without having getting people to help. Also another point on the layout Is the colour of the home page. It is a soft blue with a touch of pink. These colours are happy and light, which suggests that again it is targets towards a younger age group as the colours suggest an informal style, where the consumer feels comfortable reading the page and doesn’t feel pressured if there was dark colours.
The font on the page also gives an informal style as there isn’t much text and is more to do with pictures than text. This also backs my point of targeting towards a younger age group as they would prefer to see pictures on the home page rather than text because if there is lots of text on the page it may put off the younger age group and bore them and perhaps not explore the rest of the website. As the main aim of creating a website is to attract as many people as possible.

The pictures also gives a happy vibe with a girl wearing a pink shirt and smiling, this gives a positive vibe and pulls in the reader. So to allow my website to gain maximum viewers, I will need a good picture on the front page to attract all viewers, because if I fail to do this to the correct level then the consumer will feel bored of the page and will not be motivated enough to explore more.
My last point Is that the navigation buttons are very distinctive, so this allows the consumer to move to the different pages. This also links back to my first point that this page is targeted towards all age groups because for the younger age group using the page will be able to use it because of the easy noticeable buttons to move page.
So this shows how important a front page is as it’s the first thing the consumer see’s and will decide if they want to proceed to look at the website or not.

Questionnaire analysis

As part of my research i have analysed my questionnaire, so then i can use this data to help me create the perfect website which will be targeted to a specific age group which will be shown below.

From my primary research I have got 30 questionnaires filled out.
19 out of the 30 people I did the questionnaire on where female, so this shows that there is not a fair amount of both sex. So this will affectively make my results bias towards a female point of view.

My questionnaire then moved onto age, I can understand that this question could offend money people who didn’t want to say there age. So they may have lied on their age. So this would make my data unreliable. So to make this combatable for the individual I have put in age categories. From this bar graph we can see a large amount of the data is at a mid age and only a handful of young adults. So maybe this will make my data not reliable and I might be targeting the wrong audience.
The main reason why I did not do my questionnaire towards a younger age group was that because they may not be interested in campaigns.

My next question then moved on to what campaign they were interested in. as we can see form the pie chart, the majority of people chose health as a campaign they are most interested in. so for my website I will use this data and do a campaign on health.

My next question then moved onto asking what campaign they are most interested in. as we can see form the bar graph, Cancer was voted by the majority of people with 16/30. So I can now use this data and I will do a campaign website on cancer.
I have also found out that “Catch it, bin it, kill it” was least favourite, so I will make sure that I will not do my website on hygiene as I wouldn’t get as I wouldn’t have as large target audience than compares to cancer.

As I will be doing a website, a vital part of it will be appearance so I must make sure I have done this area at a good standard to make sure I have as many views as possible. So my question asked what sized picture I would need on the front page.
Over 50% of the people who did my question said they would like a large picture of the front page. This suggests that they would rather have a large picture with a little amount of text. This affectively will also make my website eye catching towards the consumer as when they click on the page they will see a large picture instead of lots of text which will not make the page look interesting to look at as a front page.
On my website I will be using a consistent background colour scheme throughout my website, so the question involves asking if the consumer would like a bright coloured background or a dark coloured background.
As a result the most popular answer was brightly coloured background. So this tells me that the target audience which is adults want a background which grabs their attention and is slightly informal.

By creating my website, I will have to make sure it is appealing towards my target audience.
As we can see form the bar chart, 18 out of the 30 people said they would prefer the website to be targeted only adults, this suggests that maybe it should be more formal and that I wont have to “dumb” it down so then the consumer can access the website easily and use it efficiently without any problems.

I need to make sure that the person using my website knows how to click onto other pages. My next question then asked if they would like obvious links on the website.
As we can see form the pie chart, about 75% of the people said yes. So this shows that even though they are adults they still need obvious links to move page.

My next question then moved onto asking if they would like distinctive headlines. We can see that a large majority said they would like headlines on the website to be easily noticed. By doing this, it allows the consumer to understand what is on that page.

My last question asked what feature they would like on the website.
From the bar chart 12/30 said they would like a video and 10/30 said they would like a problem page. So I am going to use both of these ideas on the website to get full potential for being a good and useful website for my target audience.
